Kane Brown Bravely Opens Up About Depression on ‘Haunted’ From ‘The High Road’

Kane Brown is boldly facing one of his biggest demons, and he is doing it for the world to see. The father of three just released his latest album, The High Road, 18 songs that encapsulate where Brown is right now in his life and career. But perhaps none as much as “Haunted,” his collaboration with Jelly Roll, which bravely tackles Brown’s own struggle with depression, and his own mental health.

“I hope it will give awareness to other people,” Brown tells American Songwriter. “One of the main things is actually talking about it. If you don’t talk about it, that’s what makes it dangerous. If nobody knows, nobody can help you.”

“Haunted” says in part, “‘Cause I’m haunted by the voice in my head / I’m haunted by the taste of that lead / I wanted too many times to jump off of the edge / Thinking I was better off dead.” The song, now out for the world to hear, is an inside look at the ongoing voices inside Brown’s head.

“The hardest thing right now is just because I’m going through it, and I have a beautiful family that I need to be here for … I’m still haunted,” admits Brown. “I still have all these crazy feelings of hurting myself and doing the worst things. Money does not solve your problems.”

It may not have been easy for Brown to open up about his biggest struggle, but he was willing to bare his soul, if only to help anyone who may need it.

“I hope it will give awareness to other people,” Brown says. “One of the main things is actually talking about it. If you don’t talk about it, that’s what makes it dangerous. If nobody knows, nobody can help you.”

The High Road is Brown’s fourth studio album, released a little more than eight years after his eponymous debut. His growth is evident on The High Road, something he hopes others glean from listening to the record.

“At the end of the day, all I ever try to do is be better than I was,” the 31-year-old reflects. “I hope my original fans sit down and say, ‘He’s growing, and this is why I love him.’ And then I hope people that don’t ever listen to me or don’t like me can like one song or also say, ‘I can tell that he is trying or he is growing.’”

When The High Road was released, Brown said it was his best work so far, at least by his own estimation.

“This album, The High Road, is my favorite album I’ve ever made,” Brown said in a statement. “I get to explore all sides of my story and styles of my music. Every song is important to me and every collaboration means something personal to me. I’m so incredibly proud of this record.”

In addition to Jelly Roll, Brown’s wife Katelyn appears on the record, along with Brad Paisley, Khalid and Marshemllo. Brown will embark on his The High Road Tour on March 13, joined by Scotty McCreeryAshley CookeMitchell Tenpenny and Dasha. See a track list below.
