Urban had for years been asked to do a residency, but was initially hesitant to commit to performing in one place night after night. But once he did his first residency, in 2019, he knew he wanted to someday return.

“I resisted a residency in Vegas for a few years. We got asked to come there quite a few years ago,” Urban told Billboard. “I just didn’t think I would like it because in my head, it just seemed like the word residency just felt like, ‘Oh, you’re just doing the same show in the same place night after night after night,’ and that just sounded like an episode of Severance to me. But when we saw the Colosseum, I was ‘Oh my God, I think we’ll have a blast in here.’ I was surprised how much I loved it.”

Ahead of the launch of Keith Urban: The Las Vegas Residency, Urban said he anticipated a lot of drinking among the crowd, something he celebrated even if he no longer partakes.

“[They are] probably a little bit drunker on certain nights, which is right up my alley. I love a drunk audience,” Urban says. “I’m all about it. But one of the things that I noticed was I’d always say, ‘Who lives here in Vegas?’ and I would see a lot of hands go up. I love the fact that a lot of the locals wanted to come out and see us play. Obviously, they can go and see everything and they’ve seen everything, and the fact that they’re seeing us really, really moved me.”

Urban is currently enjoying a Top 15 hit with “Brown Eyes Baby,” written by Morgan Wallen, Josh Thompson, Rodney Clawson and Will Bundy. The song is from a forthcoming new project.

“I found out that Morgan was a writer on it maybe the day after or thereabouts,” Urban told Everything Nash during a virtual media event. “He didn’t sing the demo. I think Josh Thompson, who’s one of the other four writers on the song, sang the demo. But it also made sense. It’s a great song, and Morgan’s a great songwriter. I was just thrilled that he didn’t want to cut it.”

Tickets for the new dates for Keith Urban: The Las Vegas Residency are available on March 15 beginning at 10:00 AM PT. All of Urban’s music, as well as a list of his Las Vegas residency dates, can be found at KeithUrban.com.
