The Nashville Zoo has faced huge financial losses as a result of COVID-19, but now several country artists are stepping up to help. Keith Urban, Brad Paisley, Sheryl Crow, Vince Gill and Amy Grant will take part in a virtual fundraiser, From Nashville Zoo with Love. The event, held on October 8 on WKRN, will be hosted by WKRN‘s Neil Orne and Scott Hamilton.
In addition to performances, From Nashville Zoo with Love will also include highlights of several of the zoo’s exhibits, along with their focus on animal care and conservation. Several of the zoo’s animals will make live, in-studio appearances, along with cameos from other celebrities as well. An online auction, featuring special animal experiences at the Nashville Zoo, and an autographed guitar from Taylor Swift, will also take place during the virtual fundraiser.
The Nashville Zoo closed for a few months, before opening in a limited capacity, placing the future of the Nashville Zoo in a challenging position.
“The numbers are pretty bleak,” Nashville Zoo President Rick Schwartz said (via WKRN). “We are anticipating a significant budget deficit this year. In-person attendance, which usually makes up about 93% of our operating revenue, has been decimated. To give you a point of reference, our attendance in 2019 was 1,266,764. Our projected attendance for this year has now fallen to 360,000, similar to our annual attendance in 2002.
“Even though we are now open again, with decreased attendance, our revenue can’t keep up with expenses,” he added. “On average, we are losing $105,000 per week, which is roughly the cost of caring for the animals.”
From Nashville Zoo with Love will air at 7:00 PM CT on WKRN. The event will also be available via Nashville Zoo’s Facebook page.
