Keith Urban could likely now get invited to any wedding he wanted to attend, but that wasn’t necessarily the case early in his career. The Aussie recalled one incident, when he was just a rising star, and he crashed a wedding, only so he could play the couple a song.
“Early on in my career, I was over here in Nashville, and I had a song on the radio,” Keith recalled to K-Rock radio station. “It was one of my early hits. We were doing this tour. Long story short, the hotel that they had us staying in was right next to this little church. I get off the tour bus, the sun’s going down. It’s in the evening, and this little church, I can hear music playing in the church. All the doors are closed. I suddenly go, ‘That’s my song! They’re playing my song. What’s going on?’ So I go look in the window, and I see these people are getting married, and they’re using my song as their wedding song.
“I went back to my tour bus, grabbed my acoustic guitar, and I got to the front door.,” he continued. “I got my guitar in my hand, and I knock on the door, and this guy comes out. I found out later it was the bride’s dad. He looked at me and he goes, ‘What do you want?’ ‘I’m the guy singing that song!’ He’s just looking at me really weird, like I’m interrupting everything. I said, ‘I’m the guy singing that song! I thought I might come in and really sing it.'”
Thankfully, the bride’s father finally let Keith in, although in hindsight the singer admits he could have handled his performance better.
“He goes, ‘Oh man! Oh my God! Come on in man!'” Keith recalled. “I walked in and just basically joined in on the recording and start playing the song.'”
Keith is currently at radio with “God Whispered Your Name” but there’s another song on his upcoming The Speed of Now Part 1 album that he is also excited about: “Polaroid.” The song, and video, resonated with Keith the first time he heard it, even though it’s one that he didn’t write.
“I really connected with the song,” Keith explained. “I used to have this house that I lived in with a few guys in my band and at some point, someone gave us this polaroid camera. We used it to take pictures of everybody and everything – crazy stuff that happened. We had all of them posted on a big board and I so clearly saw that the minute I heard the song.”
