Keith Urban Works on Being a Present Parent: ‘I Haven’t Missed Anything’

Keith Urban loves watching his girls grow up. The singer-songwriter, who shares daughters Sunday Rose, 16, and Faith Margaret, 13, with his wife, Nicole Kidman, is embracing every part of fatherhood, including the part where his children spread their wings.

Urban’s oldest daughter recently made her runway debut during Paris Fashion Week, and while some fathers might be mourning the beginning of his eldest daughter’s foray into a career without him by her side, the 57-year-old is grateful that she gets to do what she loves.

“It doesn’t feel like that to me,” Urban said on the Today Show, when asked if it felt like time went too fast. “It feels like, she’s 16. It feels like it’s been 16 years, beautifully. Because I think that we’re home most of the time, I haven’t missed anything. I’m really grateful for that.”

Both Urban and Kidman are supporting Sunday’s budding career, as much as they can, in any way that they can.

“Hopefully we can just help her keep balance with everything through all of that,” Urban told People, saying that it is often a challenge for parents when their children become famous while young.

“Hopefully she’ll benefit by having two parents that know about a certain amount of celebrity,” he added.

Neither Sunday nor Faith had a typical childhood, thanks to having two celebrities as parents, although the Grand Ole Opry member says in many ways, they are just like every other parent trying to figure out how to raise their children in the best way possible.

“It’s all a challenge. I mean, raising kids is a challenge, period. It’s about trying to keep a balance,” Urban reflected. “It’s all a process, but I think balance is key. Keeping her firmly with schoolwork and structure and everything balanced in its place is key.”

Urban will likely have to do a lot more travel next year, when he embarks on his The High Tour, in support of his latest latest HIGH album, out now.

“I love writing songs,” Urban said. “The next song is what I’m interested in, recording the next album, putting the next tour together. I’m so excited about the tour next year, The High Tour, which we’re gonna do in 2025, and be announcing shortly. I’m so ready for that.”

Included on HIGH is “Break the Chain,” a song about his childhood, much different from his daughters’ upbringing, as he watched his father’s ongoing struggle with alcoholism.

“I went and sat on his couch, and I got a legal pad out cause I like to write, and I’m writing,” Urban recalled of the day he wrote the song with Marc Scibilia. “I  get to this second verse, and I just start weeping on this guy’s couch, just crying on this guy’s couch, who I’ve just met. He looks over at me and he goes, ‘Must be true.’ And then went right back to work. And it was the perfect reaction, because it let me stay in the place I was at with no judgment, and I could finish the song. And then I got on the mic and I sang it top to bottom and then did some harmonies and everything just went quickly.

“I didn’t second guess it,” he continues. “I just did it. He sent me the track the next day, pieced together, and I just said, ‘I think we should leave this one alone. I think this is real. I’m not going to go and track it with the band on a proper session and all this BS. We’re just going to leave it like that.’”
