Kelly Clarkson‘s duet with Terri Clark almost didn’t happen, but she’s so glad that it did. The American Idol alum joins Clark on “If I Were You,” from Clark’s latest Take Two project, a collaboration that Clarkson says happened largely because of divine intervention.
“No one would believe how this duet ended up happening,” Clarkson says in a video she shared on social media. “I love Terri, and she could have just called me out of the blue and asked me, but how this happened is so funny. I was texting one night with my manager, Trisha, and then all of a sudden, I got back a message, and it was from Terri. We had each other’s numbers and we had texted before. But then I was like, ‘Why is Terri…?’ Somehow I ended up in this whole conversation. I think I’m talking to Trisha. It was Terri. Terri was talking to me probably like, ‘What are you talking about?'”
Although neither of the singers can quite explain how they managed to connect one night, Clarkson feels certain that their connection was meant to be.

“My phone somehow — the universe, God, everything wanted us to do this duet, because I had no idea that she was doing this project, first,” Clarkson explains. “We ended up just talking one night, and she was like, ‘Well, maybe — this is very random, but maybe, now that we’re talking, do you want to do this duet?’ And I was like, ‘Absolutely.’ I was so stoked. But literally, how we ended up even texting that one night, and getting together to do this, it was meant to be. And my phone literally had crossed, merged their contacts, any time I texted either one. It was weird.”
A longtime diehard country music fan, the Emmy Award-winning talk show host is honored to be part of a project, along with Cody Johnson. Lainey Wilson, Ashley McBryde and more, celebrating some of Clark’s biggest hits.
“I’m so glad she asked me,” Clarkson gushes. “I’m so glad. She was like, ‘I maybe wouldn’t have asked or bothered you, had this not happened.’ I was like, ‘I’m so glad it happened, that we randomly were texting this night.’ I’m so glad that mishap happened, because it’s just one of the coolest things to be a part of, to sing with one of your heroes, and they like what you do. So thanks again, Terri, for letting me be a part of the project.”
Ahead of the release of Take Two, Clark said it was a dream come true to be able to collaborate with some of her favorite singers.
“I had a list, a wish list of people,” Clark shared with Everything Nash and other outlets. “Of course, I wanted some current artists that I had never worked with before, to be a part of this, if I could get them. So I started just making a list of people, and started asking people. Out of everybody I asked, there were maybe only two that had scheduling conflicts that couldn’t do it. I was just blown away with some of the names that I got.”
