Lena Stone is giving Everything Nash readers an exclusive first look at the acoustic video for “Out Of My Hands.” The song is from her Princess EP, released in April.
“I actually recorded the EP last Spring,” Lena told Everything Nash. “I released the single, and the big plan was that it was going to come out this Spring. I was going to play shows in New York and LA, Boston and Nashville, do the whole thing. And then COVID hit, and that all went out the window.”
While some artists decided to delay the release of new music amid the coronavirus pandemic, Lena was eager to share the music that had, in many ways, become a labor of love for her.
“I decided that I wanted to put the music out anyway, because I worked so hard on it,” said the singer. “So the whole EP came out in April, the studio-produced versions, which is great, but it doesn’t really translate in a pandemic. I was trying to think about what I could do in this time to produce more content for my fans.
“It occurred to me that the biggest thing I was losing out on was getting to play live shows, and for people to hear what these songs sound like live,” she continued. “And so, the concept that we could get to recreate an experience was an acoustic version of the EP. We were able to produce it that way, work with the original files and strip down the production for all the songs, and give them a second life.”
Of all the songs on Princess, “Out Of My Hands” is the one that Lena felt was the most transformed with an acoustic version.
“On the original EP, it is a totally piano-based,” Lena noted. “We wrote the song on piano, sitting around this grand piano. So to translate it into an acoustic guitar version felt like a really cool second side of the coin for this song, and to really let the lyrics shine.”
“Out Of My Hands” is one of the most personal songs Lena has ever written, giving listeners an intimate look at her own grieving process, when a relationship she was deeply invested in unexpectedly ended.
“This song was about someone who was really important in my life for a long time, and I didn’t think would ever not be in my life,” Lena revealed. “It never occurred to me that we wouldn’t always be in each other’s lives, and then life happens. People fall out, and we did. I went through this grieving process of grieving this relationship and trying to do it on my Type A personality.
“And it turns out, you can’t do it that way,” she added. “I just have to give myself some grace. This process is out of my hands and I’m going to get over it when I get over it. And it’s okay to be sad right now. So that was kind of where the idea came from.”
