Loretta Lynn was 90 years old when she passed away last October, but her legacy will continue for generations to come. The Country Music Hall of Fame member finished a book, A Song And A Prayer, before her death, with her family announcing they will posthumously release the faith-based book as a tribute to the country music legend.

“Originally slated to come out in December, mom worked all summer to complete this book,” daughter Patsy Lynn Russell says. “It was so important to her because she had never devoted an entire book to her faith. Mom was always open about her faith but it was a deeply personal matter to her, one in which we knew at the core was the most important thing in her life. Her passing has made this project all the more special to us and we know her fans will feel the same way,”

Russell also spoke about the book on social media when the news was announced.

“It is so beautifully written. Such an inspiring book of Bible verses and songs; everything that my mom held dear to her heart,” she said. “I was just brought to tears when I got the book. I hope you will enjoy it as well.”

 

A Song And A Prayer is a collection of 30 devotions, combining Lynn’s song lyrics with prayers, inspired by songwriting sessions with Dr. Kim McLean, who is also an ordained minister.

“My writing sessions with Loretta were inspired by our friendship and faith,” McLean says. “She always told me we need to ‘write it the way we say it,’ and these are the things she felt were important to say. It is a capstone project, and a culmination of her wholehearted, unapologetic love of God, of people, and of life. We were similar in many ways and connected on a soul level, but her fans know that’s the only way Loretta ever connected – heart to heart.

“We laughed all the time when we wrote, sometimes argued, then laughed again,” she adds. “This book came about so naturally. Loretta said this project was special to her, and I’m honored to be her collaborator and friend. She was such an inspiration.”

Although she was a country music pioneer, Lynn was never shy about her faith either. She spoke about her Christianity in a video she shared on social media on Easter of 2022.

 

“My faith means a lot to me,” Lynn said at the time. “If it wasn’t for God, none of us would be here. Jesus is my friend. I keep hold of his hand and I don’t let loose. If I ever let loose, well, I hope he grabs me because I’ll be lost.”

Lynn passed away on October 4 at her ranch in Hurricane Mills, Tennessee. Her last album, Still Woman Enough, was released in 2021.
