Grab a tissue before listening to Luke Bryan’s new song, “Build Me a Daddy.” The tear-jerking song was written by Josh Thompson, Jake Mitchell and Brett Tyler, and is from Luke’s upcoming Born Here, Live Here, Die Here album, scheduled to be released on August 7.
“A boy walks past a window of a glowing open sign / Full of wooden toys and trucks and painted trains,” the song begins. “Rings a bell up on the counter, hands a picture to the man / Of a kid beside a soldier smiling away / Said, ‘Sir, I’ve heard you can build anything’ / Could you build me a daddy? / Strong as Superman / Make him ten feet tall with a southern drawl / And a crooked smile if you can / ‘Cause I sure miss him / Maybe you could bring him back? / If I walked in with him, it’d sure make momma happy /
If you could build me a daddy.”
The American Idol judge, who released “One Margarita” earlier this year, spoke out about the song on social media.
“[Build Me a Daddy] tells the story of a boy and his dad in a beautiful and emotional way,” Luke wrote. “I hope this song and this story touches you, in the same way it touched me.”
Luke certainly knows a thing or two about being a father. In addition to his own two sons, 12-year-old Bo and nine-year-old, Tate, he and his wife, Caroline, are also raising their nephew, Til, and taking care of his two older nieces, Jordan and Kris, children of Luke’s sister, Kelly and brother-in-law, Ben. Luke and Caroline stepped in after Kelly passed away in 2007, and Ben passed away in 2014.
“I do it with my wife, hand in hand,” Bryan said on the TODAY Show. “The work that [Caroline] puts in with the children … I mean, it’s just amazing. I look at her phone and it’s just pinging and vibrating and going off constantly, and it’s the children.”
Luke planned on releasing Born Here, Live Here, Die Here earlier this year, and was going to headline his Proud to Be Right Here Tour this summer. Because of COVID-19, Luke pushed back the release of his record until August 7. According to his website, Luke’s opening night of his Proud to Be Right Here Tour is still listed as August 4, in Madison Square Garden. He is also scheduled to headline one night of the Pepsi Gulf Coast Jam in September.
