Maren Morris is opening about the challenges of motherhood. The 30-year-old, who welcomed son Hayes in March, admits she battled post-partum depression after his arrival, but is finally starting to feel more like herself.
“I’m kind of coming through the tunnel now. I feel back to normal,” Maren told CBS This Morning. “Fortunately, I was able to do phone therapy during the pandemic. And [I have] people around me that love me that are like, ‘Hey, if you’re drowning right now, there’s help.'”
“You’re trying to become a new mother and good parent and do everything right, and you just feel like you suck at every level.” she added. “And then the one thing I’ve always felt like I have a handle on is my music, and to not be able to tour and have to furlough my band and crew, it was just a lot.”
As Maren was adjusting to being a mother, while being forced to stay home, her career was still soaring. Her single, “The Bones,” spent an astonishing 19 weeks at the top of the charts, setting a new record for female artists.
“I think a lot of it was maybe the message behind ‘The Bones,’ was taking on a larger theme beyond a love song,” Maren reflected. “It was ‘The house don’t fall when the bones are good.‘ A lot of people reached out to me and would be like, ‘That’s our country right now.'”
Maren already disclosed that even Hayes’ arrival, at the start of COVID-19, went nothing like she planned. After laboring for 30 hours, the singer had an emergency C-section.
“I labored for 30 hours. I wanted to do it naturally, but I stopped having contractions, and it was just time to call it, and get him out safely,” Maren shared in a video posted by Little Spoon’s Is This Normal series. “I’m glad that we did it, but definitely not planning for a C-section, I didn’t read up on any of that ahead of time, because I didn’t expect to get one. So I just wish I had done a better job at preparing myself for the shock of a C-section, because the post-partum of a C-section is so brutal.”
Maren won one ACM Award already, taking home the trophy for Music Event of the Year, for “Fooled Around and Fell in Love,” which she recorded with Miranda Lambert and Miranda’s other Roadside Bars & Pink Guitars tour mates. She is also nominated for Female Artist of the Year and Album of the Year, for GIRL.
The 2020 ACM Awards will air live from Nashville on Wednesday, September 16, at 8:00 PM ET on CBS.
