Matthew West just released “While I Can,” a new song and video that is a powerful reminder about what is, and isn’t, important in life. The father of two, who wrote “While I Can,” includes his mother, daughters and wife in the thought-provoking new video, out now.
“With ‘While I Can,’ I think I wrote a song that I will be trying to live up to for the rest of my life,” West says. “This is a song about the inner struggle between a busy life and a meaningful one. Sometimes my life can fall off track and my priorities can get mixed up. It’s in the moments of quiet reflection where songs like these rise to the surface and say the things my aching heart is feeling. This moment of quiet reflection turned into a moment of much needed redirection for me and I hope this song will do the same for someone else who hears it.”
West is proud of the message of “While I Can,” even if he admits it is one he might struggle to live up to.
The “While I Can” music video is out now. It’s a reminder to prioritize the most important parts of your life,” the singer shared on social media. “Like taking my little girl out on an ice cream date, spending more time with God, and buying flowers for my beautiful wife. Life’s too short to not spend time doing what you love with who you love, every second of every day.”
West recently celebrated his 12th No. 1 hit, with “Me On Your Mind,” a song that was inspired by thinking about his own relationship with God.
“I don’t know if I’m getting more emotional or what, but my songs are making me cry more than ever,” West told Everything Nash. “‘Me On Your Mind’ is this song about just that moment when you feel like God is trying to speak directly to you, and then you’re amazed by it. I thought ‘Why would He even pay attention to me?’ I don’t know if you’ve ever heard a song and you thought, ‘Man, that song’s speaking to me, That song’s for me.’ Or maybe you’ve read a Bible verse and thought, ‘Wow, I needed to hear that today.’ The thought that God was not surprised by that, that it was all part of his design, is really what inspired me to write that song.”
“While I Can” will be included on West’s forthcoming double album, My Story Your Glory, out on February 17. Pre-order is available here.
