Morgan Evans is sharing the story behind his heartbreaking new single, “Over For You.” The song was written in response to the end of his five-year marriage to Kelsea Ballerini, never imagining that the song would become one of his fastest-rising singles to date.
“I sat down in the room, and it was the only song I’d written in two months,” Evans recalls on Apple Music’s Today’s Country Radio with Kelleigh Bannen. “And I sat in the room and there was a good mate of mine in there, Geoff Warburton… He was in there and two people I’d never met, actually, Madison [Love] and Tim [Sommers]. And I just sat in the corner of the room, I was like, ‘Well, look, I’m going to be useless today unless I just tell you what’s going on.’
“That’s what happened,” he continued. “I had that title; just as a songwriter in general, you’re writing down titles all the time from life. But it just came about as a, ‘Hey, this is what’s going on.'”
Evans performed the song for the first time at CMC Rocks in Melbourne, Australia, an unexpected addition to his set list that he added at the last minute.
“I just sat down at the piano at this festival we played in Australia, and I was going to play a different song,” Evans recalls. “I was going to play a piano version of a song called ‘Diamonds’ that we put out a couple years ago. And I’d written this song ‘Over for You’ the week before, and I just sat down and looked out at the crowd. It’s the biggest show I’ve ever done in my career. We were headlining this festival. It was 22,000 people in Australia, and for some reason, I felt like I needed to get it off my chest.”
Evans might have been surprised by the crowd’s reaction to “Over For You,” but when he played the song, it was entirely for himself — even if he didn’t realize it at the time.
“It’s obviously a very heavy song, but I finished and got the guitar and the set went on,” Evans says. “It wasn’t until afterwards I realized how much of a weight had just left my shoulders after playing the song.”
The 37-year-old previously said that he recorded his vocal on the same day he wrote “Over For You,” making it one of the most emotional and vulnerable songs he has ever released.
“It was a difficult time in my life and writing this helped me process a lot of what I was going through,” he said when the song was released. I’d like to thank everyone that has reached out the last few weeks, both those with messages of support and those sharing their own stories.”
Evans will spend part of 2023 on a co-headlining Day Drunk Me Tour with Mitchell Tenpenny in Germany and the Netherlands. Find all of Evans’ music, including “Over For You,” and a list of his upcoming shows, at MorganEvansMusic.com.
