When Morgan Myles began her Blind Audition on The Voice, singing a stunning rendition of Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah,” she hoped one of the four coaches would turn their chair around. Instead, all four of the coaches, including Blake Shelton, Gwen Stefani, John Legend and newcomer Camila Cabello all quickly turned for Myles, with Cabello blocking Stefani so she could not be chosen by Myles.
“We don’t get a lot of people singing that song because it’s so intimidating,” Legend said following Myles’ performance. “It takes some cojones to come here and sing it with such confidence that we got to see your range and hear those piercing, beautiful notes. It was exquisite. One of the best Blind Auditions I have seen in a long time.”
Myles revealed that she has been touring and performing on her own in Nashville for the last 16 years, but is ready to take her career to the next level.
“There were days I was just about to lose it but I’ve been very blessed because my parents have been my rock in a really, really hard industry,” Myles said of her decision to compete. “So many Voice artists have made it. I hope I can use this platform to be a successful artist as well. I think the whole experience is going to be fun.”
When asked to describe her music, the Pennsylvania native says she is a mix of a lot of different genres.
“I’m on the edge of country, but I’ve always been extremely soulful,” Myles explained. “And I love pop melodies, but I love storytelling. I hope we can find that right lane.”
Cabello made it instantly clear that she wanted Myles on her team, even though Shelton might have seemed like the obvious choice.
“You have such a gorgeous tone,” Cabello said. “I want to hear a record from you … I know you’re the least likely to pick me with Blake, country, and John, soul, but I do love pop melodies and I am a storyteller, too. I feel like you know who you are as an artist and if you pick me as your coach, I will be excited to help you on that journey.”
Shelton also made a passionate plea to have Myles join his team, claiming he had the expertise and skill set she was looking for to take her career to where she wanted to go.
“Hi, Morgan, I would like to have a heart-to-heart talk with you for a second,” Shelton shared. “When I moved to Nashville, I was 17 years old and I started singing demos for songwriters, and that was where I made all my beer money. So, when I hear you talking about that and then when I hear you talk about playing the crappy noon spots on festivals, I did all that stuff by the way.”
“Your gift is that you can really make people believe what you’re singing about, and you just need somebody to help you along that journey,” he continued. “I would be honored to be that coach for you, Morgan.”
Cabello determined to have the last word, saying she wanted to be part of Myles’ journey to make unique, authentic music.
“Can I just say one last thing,” Cabello said. “I want what’s best for you. If what you want is Blake’s support and help to be a country artist, absolutely. If what you want is to create your own lane, you’re not a country artist, you’re not a pop artist, you’re just Morgan, then I would be excited to work with you. I just wanted to say that.”
Although Shelton might have seemed like the likeliest choice, with his roots in Nashville and powerful pull within the music industry, Myles chose Cabello.
The Voice airs on Monday and Tuesday nights at 8:00 PM ET on NBC.
