Morgan Wallen and Dan + Shay are among the winners of the 2022 American Music Awards. The ceremony, hosted by comedian and actor Wayne Brady, was held on Sunday, November 20, at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles.
Wallen won two American Music Awards. The Tennessee native won for both Favorite Male Country Artist and Favorite Country Song, for “Wasted On You.” Other nominees in the Favorite Male Country Artist category were Chris Stapleton, Cody Johnson, Luke Combs and Walker Hayes.
Wallen’s “Wasted On You” won for Favorite Country Song. The tune beat out Stapleton’s “You Should Probably Leave,” “‘Til You Can’t” by Cody Johnson, “Thinking ‘Bout You” by Dustin Lynch and MacKenzie Porter, and the CMA Song of the Year, “Buy Dirt” by Jordan Davis, featuring Luke Bryan.
Dan + Shay won for Favorite Country Duo or Group. They were nominated in a category that included Lady A, Old Dominion, Parmalee and the Zac Brown Band.
Taylor Swift won a total of six American Music Awards, including two in the country categories. Swit beat out Carrie Underwood, Lainey Wilson, Maren Morris and Miranda Lambert to win Favorite Female Country Artist. Her Red (Taylor’s Version) record also won the American Music Award for Favorite Country Album, in a category that also included Underwood’s Denim & Rhinestones, Combs’ Growin’ Up, Johnson’s Human: The Double Album and Hayes’ Country Stuff: The Album.
Wallen recently wrapped up his The Dangerous Tour, which he revealed he did mostly sober.
“I think we played probably 75 shows, something like that this year, and I did them all mostly in a sober state of mind,” Wallen told Extra. “I was really, really focused. I kind of treated it like an athlete would a season, and I think that was really key to me. I feel like I really thrived in that, so I think that’s really stood out to me.”
