Nashville’s Hermitage Hotel Named the 2020 Historic Hotel of the Year

Nashville’s Hermitage Hotel has long been known as one of the city’s most historic landmarks, and now it is being nationally recognized for its legacy. The downtown hotel has just been named the 2020 Historic Hotel of the Year, by Historic Hotels of America.

“The Hermitage Hotel is deeply committed to historical preservation, so to be named the 2020 Historic Hotel of the Year is our pinnacle of success,” said Dee Patel, Managing Director of The Hermitage Hotel, in a statement (via Nashville Lifestyles). “Stepping into our grand lobby is like stepping back in time, as stories deeply rooted in history emerge at every turn. On behalf of our owners and our full team, we are truly honored to receive this prestigious award in tandem with our National Historic Landmark designation, acknowledging the integral role the hotel played in the suffrage movement.”

The award is given annually to “a historic hotel whose owners, leadership, and employees are careful overseers of historic preservation, by stewarding history, heritage, and stories for generations of guests to come.” The Hermitage Hotel is receiving the industry recognition this year, in honor of its “unparalleled celebration of suffrage history and demonstrating a long tradition of exceptional hospitality and service.”

The Hermitage Hotel, which was officially declared a national historic landmark earlier this year, was Nashville’s first million dollar hotel, according to the hotel’s website. Construction on the hotel began in 1908, after raising a then-unheard of amount of money, $300,000, to begin building. From the beginning, The Hermitage Hotel was created to be a place of luxury and opulence, including detailed woodwork and extravagant chandeliers, both still on display.

The official grand opening of The Hermitage Hotel took place in 1910. In the past century-plus, The Hermitage Hotel has welcomed presidents, celebrities, country music superstars and more. Although it has changed hands a few times (and even closed for a while), The Hermitage Hotel remains one of the premier places to stay in Nashville, as well as a popular place for travelers and locals to eat, at both the Capitol Grille and the Oak Bar.
