It seems one of Nashville’s most popular places to eat might soon need to find a new home. The owners of Music City’s The Palm reveal that officials with Hilton Downtown Nashville, which owns the prime property where The Palm resides, are trying to evict The Palm over unpaid rent. The Palm, which suffered severe financial loss due to COVID-19, especially in the more than two months when the Hilton voluntarily closed its doors, say they should not have to pay the full amount, when the Hilton, located next door to The Palm, was not open for business.
“This drastic reduction in revenue is due in part to the Hilton’s conscious decision to close its operations from March 24, 2020 to June 8, 2020, despite no mandate to do so,” The Palm’s lawyers said in a court document (via the Nashville Post). “It is patently unfair for the Hilton to continue to demand that The Palm pay rent and other charges in full, especially considering the Hilton made the conscious decision to remain closed during the months of March, April, May, and part of June.”
The Palm reopened at half-capacity in May, although the Hilton remained closed until the beginning of June. Steve Scheinthal, Executive Vice-President and general counsel for Landry’s, owner of The Palm, gave a statement to the Nashville Post about the legal argument.
“The Palm is happy to be open and serving Nashville,” the statement reads. “Our priority has, and will continue to be, putting our employees back to work in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. Although the Hilton believes it is owed rent during the two months that it closed its own doors, we have offered to pay all of the rent that they believe to be owed in order to put this matter behind us and keep our dedicated employees working.”
A date for the hearing has yet to be announced. The Hilton is asking for $114,922.87. The Palm has already paid nearly $25,000 in rent since March.
The Palm is located at 140 5th Ave South in downtown Nashville, across from the Bridgestone Arena.
