Natalie Grant has released a new song, one that has meant a lot to her for a long time, this one with a country music icon. The gospel star just released “Step By Step,” joined by Dolly Parton for the uptempo track.

“Step By Step” was previously recorded by Whitney Houston, and used for the Preacher’s Wife movie, which starred Houston, and was released in 1996.

“In 1996, ‘Step By Step’ is a song I would blast on cassette in my beat up Volkswagen Golf as I drove to my job at Medicare,” Grant says. “The dream when I moved to Nashville was music, not Medicare, but I had to do what was necessary to keep going. This song was my reminder to keep putting one foot in front of the other. If you would’ve told me then that one day, I would not only be recording this song, but doing it with an International icon, I never ever would’ve believed it. I still can’t believe it.”

This isn’t the first collaboration Parton has done with a Christian artist. She joined For KING & COUNTRY on “God Only Knows,” as well as with Zach Williams on the Grammy-winning “There Was Jesus,” which marked Parton’s first No. 1 hit on a Christian chart.

“I grew up in the church,” Parton told K-Love. “This particular song, it was just like a Godsend. When I first heard it, I thought, ‘What a well-written song’ … Such wonderful writing. I just loved all the lines on the song. I just felt it. I felt like Jesus was in the room. I’d been actually thinking about doing more faith-based music, and I’d been kind of waiting, and writing some things on my own. But when this came, I felt like it was really a gift from God.”

“I love his voice, and just hearing him through the headphones, being that close to him, it was really a very spiritual thing, for both of us I think,” she added. “Just that wonderful song, what it was saying and what it was about. And our voices sounded so good — we felt like we were really praising God in our own special way.”

“Step By Step” is from Grant’s forthcoming Seasons album, out on October 6. The record features collaborations with numerous artists, on songs that have impacted Grant throughout her life and career.
