Natasha Owens Brings Joy to 2020 With ‘Too Much Christmas’ Video [EXCLUSIVE]

If there was ever a time for a little bit of good cheer, it’s now, which is exactly why Natasha Owens created her humorous song and video, “Too Much Christmas.” Starring Natasha and her own brave husband, David, in the video, the gospel singer hopes that, even amid so much uncertainty this year, people can find a reason to smile for at least a few minutes.

“We were talking with my producer and co-writer and I said, ‘You know, 2020 just absolutely sucks,'” Natasha recalled to Everything Nash. “‘And we need to have Christmas brought in. It needs to be here now. It has a little bit of joy.”

Her co-writer, Ian Eskelin, had already started writing a song with another artist, which he thought would be perfect for Natasha.

“He said, ‘I started writing a song last year with Francesca Battistelli,” she recounted. “‘We’ve got a verse and a chorus shelled out. And I think it will be perfect.’ I had made the comment that we can have Christmas in July, and so he brought me the words to that. They had started to shell it out, and we just continued to write it and made it kind of a Dumb and Dumber / Christmas Vacation-type vibe. And then that led into the video.”

The video includes tacky Christmas clothes and decorations, along with a fur-laden vehicle, complete with antlers and a red nose.

“My music producer said, ‘I heard of a guy. His name is Max Hsu, and he is just a genius when you’re looking at something outside of the box, and you need to do something outside the box on there,'” Natasha shared. “At first we were just going to maybe do some kind of pool party thing. We got him on the phone, and he listened to the song. We started telling him that we hear this song, and we think of Dumb and Dumber. We think of Christmas Vacation, just all the funny parts throughout those two movies. And he said, ‘What if we created a station wagon car, like Dumb and Dumber. What would you think about that?'”

Natasha loved the idea, but carrying it out took a bit more work.

“We bought a car for $500, an Explorer, and had it wrapped in fur,” Natasha recounted. “And I had to pay like $1100 to enclose it in an enclosed trailer, so that the fur wouldn’t fly off or get wet. The driver of the trailer said, ‘I have never, ever, ever picked up a car like this.’ Delivery was more than the actual car. They bought a massive comb to give to my husband, to do the fur. And he said, I”m going to drive it to the fanciest steak place in Dallas, and I’m going to valet it. And I’m going to give them that comb and tell them that they get more of a tip if they comb the fur while I’m eating.”

“Too Much Christmas” is from an upcoming Christmas album, something that has been a dream of Natasha’s for a long time, but never felt that the time was right, until now.

“I had it on my bucket list for years, and we just have never taken time to do it,” Natasha said. “We made it really fun. We have five original songs on there that have either an ’80s disco vibe or there’s ‘Too Much Christmas’ vibes, or we’ve got a song called ‘Christmas Memories.’ My late father loved Christmas so much, and it completely revolved around making memories. So we put all of my childhood memories and things that we used to do into that song. It sounds like a Hallmark song.

“We had so much fun with the Christmas album because you’re stuck in a genre, and you’re stuck in a box,” she added. “You can only use so many instruments, so many sounds. And for Christmas you can do anything you want to do. It’s been really fun to go outside of those normal boundaries.”

Natasha’s Christmas album is scheduled to be released on November 27.
