People’s Choice Country Awards: Dan + Shay Win The Group/Duo of 2024

For the second year in a row, Dan + Shay have taken home the People’s Choice Country Award for The Group/Duo of the Year. Both Dan Smyers and Shay Mooney were on hand to accept the trophy, expressing gratitude for a category they shared with acts like Old Dominion, Brothers Osborne, Zac Brown Band and more.

“First of all, I just want to say thank you so much,” Mooney said. “Everybody in this category are friends of ours. We’re so grateful to be mentioned among so many amazing, talented artists. This feels like such a family being on stage. Thank you to our wives. Hannah, I love you so much. It’s rare that I get to be this close to you. We’re having our fourth baby in January, and she looks amazing. I love you guys. I’m so proud of all the work we put in on this album. I love you, bro. This is amazing.”

“Thank you guys, so much, for this,” Smyers continued. “Thank you to our fans for voting. It’s been the best year of our career. We’ve been on the road all summer, getting to see our fans, getting to hug our fans. My wife Abby. I love you so much. Thank you for making this all possible for me. Country radio, all our streaming partners, everybody here at NBC, People’s Choice. Thank you guys. We love you all. God bless country music. You guys are amazing.”

Dan + Shay’s success is especially sweet considering they almost stopped making music together. The pair revealed last year that they went four months without speaking, a painful break they felt compelled to tell their fans about when they had finally reunited.

“We felt it was important that we were very candid with our fans and with people, because I think with anything else with the need, like anxiety that other people go through, the more you talk about that stuff, the more it helps,” Mooney explains. “And we felt like it was our responsibility to be open and vulnerable, so other people know that somebody else is going through this as well.”

Dan + Shay have a Top 20 hit right now with “Bigger Houses.” The song is the title track of their latest album, out last year. The song follows their tenth No. 1 hit with “Save Me The Trouble,” from the same record.
