People’s Choice Country Awards: mgk and Jelly Roll Win The Crossover Song of 2024

mgk and Jelly Roll have a People’s Choice Country Award! The two rappers won The Crossover Song of 2024, for “Lonely Road.” The song, released by mgk (formerly known as Machine Gun Kelly) features John Denver as one of the writers on the song, since it features his iconic song “Take Me Home, Country Roads.”

“I wanna thank the John Denver estate for trusting us with this interpolation. I want to thank the collaborators, everyone that’s on stage with me … Jelly Roll. Jelly, I love you. We went from ten years ago hating each other to elevating each other. Comparison is the thief of joy. Comparison is the thief of joy. There’s enough room on this couch for everybody. We found camaraderie in the chaos. Last year I was right there, sititng in that seat, watching my boy rock on that stage, and I was like, ‘One day, I hope we’re up there.’ And we’re here! Thank you guys.”

Jelly Roll was unable to be in attendance, due to being on his Beautifully Broken Tour. But he recently revealed how their unlikely collaboration came to be, when they wer both in Los Angeles after the Grammy Awards.

“We’re just out hanging in LA,” Jelly Roll said on the Spout podcast. “We’re just kind of venting and we’re playing each other songs.”

Jelly Roll is having his own moment in the spotlight, as his latest single,  “I Am Not Okay,” hits the Top 10. The song is from his forthcoming Beautifully Broken album, out on October 11. The 11-track record also includes “Liar” and “Get By,” part of a record Jelly Rollsays he has put a lot of thought into it, and the messages he wants to share through his msuic.

“I’m looking for songs that have a purpose,” Jelly Roll told the New York Times (via People). “When I go to put out a song under the name Jelly Roll, I think to myself, Why? Because for the first time in my life, it has nothing to do with a financial decision. I’m well past putting out anything for money. So, now, it really is a why.”
