Randy Travis just hit a new milestone. The 61-year-old just surpassed one million streams with his new single, “Fool’s Love Affair.” The song, which was recorded long before his 2013 stroke, was recently uncovered when one of the song’s co-writers, Charlie Monk, found it in his office, earning praise from several artists, including Carrie Underwood, Chris Young, Josh Turner and more. Randy’s wife of five years, Mary Travis, spoke out about the unexpected surge in his career, especially now.
“The respect and the admiration that he has gained from the artist friends, that’s what means so much to him,” Mary told Music Row. “And the fans that are still around after our seven-year hiatus, dealing with the stroke and aftermath, those fans are still around, I think that’s what matters most.
“He always told me, ‘If one of my songs touches one person, I’ve made my mark. I’ve done my part,” she added.
“Fool’s Love Affair,” which was released on the 35th anniversary of Randy’s debut single, “On the Other Hand,” was co-written by Charlie, along with Keith Stegall and Milton Brown. The song was sung by Randy, not because he was working on an album, but because he was still singing demos at the time, and they hoped to pitch the song to a bigger artist.
“They were at that point looking or someone that could lay down a demo vocal so they could pitch it to people like Merle Haggard and George Jones,” Mary recounted. “Randy was doing demos and working at the Nashville Palace at the time, so I guess it didn’t ever get recorded by anybody and Charlie Monk shoved the 8-track in the back of his desk. He couldn’t find the master recording of it for years.
“Randy remembers doing the demo,” she continued. “For two or three years, Charlie looked for it. Then, when he was cleaning out his office on Music Row and was boxing up a bunch of stuff to take to the Country Music Hall of Fame, he stumbled over a box in the corner and out fell this multi-track of the song.”
It was Kyle Lehning, who produced several of Randy’s albums, who made the song come to life.
“It was vintage sounding because there is static and rattle, like something that would be played on an old jukebox,” Mary said. “But it was great hearing it because it was new material. Then when Kyle got through with it, it gave me goosebumps. I cried, because I love hearing that voice again. And I know he was proud not only for Charlie and Kyle, but to hear Kyle’s work again … I think everyone has room in their heart and room on the radio dial. It is pretty cool to hear him over the airwaves again.”
Thankfully, there might still be more music — music fans have never heard — on the way from the Country Music Hall of Fame member.
“We have a nice back [catalog]. We have found some stuff in the archives, but there are some political issues,” Kyle told Everything Nash and other outlets. “We can’t figure out who wrote the song, but there are recordings and they have been finished up and they’re sitting there. I don’t know when that’s gonna come out.
“Right now, this is the only thing from back in that time that’s legally okay to put out there,” he added. “We have a couple of project things, but they’re a ways off from ever seeing the light of day, but they’re finished.”
