Rascal Flatts might be disbanding, but Gary LeVox isn’t done making music. The lead singer of the trio, which also includes Jay DeMarcus and Joe Don Rooney, reveals he wants to work on a solo country album in the near future.
“I think I’m going to do a solo country album,” LeVox told Bobby Bones as part of his Bobbycast podcast (via Taste of Country).
Although the Flatts insist there were no hard feelings in their decision to end the award-winning group, after 20 years together, Gary acknowledges that he is ready to make music on his own terms.
“Sometimes it’s difficult for the three of us to agree on songs to cut and things I really believe that would work out,” Gary conceded. “I feel the responsibility and the calling to continue to keep singing if Flatts does or not.”
Gary is also working on a solo Christian album, and is ready to share songs that he wants to sing, without trying to please his fellow bandmates.
“There are songs that I truly believe in and that I love that I think are giants — that I think the world needs to hear,” Gary said. “I’m excited about doing my own thing and I’m excited about what happens if the Flatts get together at some point when everything clears up. I don’t know.”
“We will see,” he added. “I’m going to continue to work — that’s my calling and what I need to do … I will just see where God takes it.”
Rascal Flatts planned on being on their farewell Life is a Highway Tour this year, which had to be canceled because of COVID-19. After preparing to wrap up the Flatts at the end of 2020, the threesome admits they have no idea what 2021 will look like for them, at least not yet.
“Going into this year we were gearing up for an emotional year, for sure, and every show was gonna matter just so much more with each one we did,” Joe Don said (via their record label). “Just to have your legs cut completely out from under you with all your plans, this has definitely changed all those emotions and all those feelings we thought we’d be feeling. It’s also a celebration of 20 years, which is just an incredible milestone for anything, to be doing it for 20 years is really special. We had so much that we were looking forward to with this whole year, and this has just completely wiped all that out.
“It’s almost like a clean slate of emotions going, ‘Well, when, if ever again, can we maybe take what this year was gonna be and apply it to the year ahead, whenever that might be,’” he continued. “We just don’t know. We’re completely clueless for what that might be. So the emotions I think have changed a little bit maybe, because now we’re just looking to see what we might be able to do. But the one thing remains true, is that we’re still able to make music and put music out and that’s got us on a pretty good high right now.”
Rascal Flatts haven’t ruled out touring in 2021 instead. Their new EP, How They Remember You, will be released on July 31. It is currently available for pre-order at Amazon.
