Reba McEntire Explains Reason for New Version of ‘What If’ Video Amid Coronavirus Pandemic

As Reba McEntire saw the world face fear and uncertainty due to the coronavirus pandemic, she knew she had a message she wanted to share. The global superstar immediately thought of her 1997 hit, “What If,” penned by Diane Warren, and decided to redo the video, knowing that message was as applicable today as it was more than two decades ago.

“It was a good idea to bring that song back because it is timely,” Reba said on the Today Show. “The things we’re dealing with now, we deal with it all the time, we’ve just got to stay together and find a better way of doing things… The song is really important today. It’s what if we did reach out with one hand, what if we sang with just one voice — maybe we could change things.”

“What If” says in part, “Somehow it’s all up to us, gotta take this world / Make it a world of love, gotta do it now / Gotta find a way to make a change somehow / There’s gotta be a way for us to make it better.” The song, which was originally recorded to benefit the Salv, felt important to Reba, especially now.

“This song is as relevant today as it was 23 years ago,” Reba said of the song. “That’s the power of a great song and Diane Warren is no stranger to writing great songs. Even though we may not be able to physically reach out with just one hand right now, we can still be there for each other and take care of our neighbors, essential workers and medical professionals.”

Reba is staying with her family in Oklahoma during the coronavirus pandemic. She has postponed both her Las Vegas shows with Brooks & Dunn, and her upcoming arena tour. Tour updates are available at Reba.com.
