Reba McEntire has high praise for Trisha Yearwood. The Country Music Hall of Fame member was on hand to honor Yearwood, when Yearwood received her star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
“The first time I remember meeting you was at the ACMs, early in the ’90s, when you were nominated for New Female Vocalist,” McEntire shares. “After the award show, we went to the party and I came by and sat with you and your mom. You had on a silver dress. I sat there with you and I thought, ‘I love her already. She’s sitting with her mom.’ Because my mom and I were real close just like you and your mom, and your dry wit and sense of humor won my heart. I said, ‘Where are you from?’ She said, ‘Georgia.’ I said, ‘All right, I like you already.’ Then you were funny, and then the years just kept going by, and we got to hang out, and be with each other. We got to sing together and have dinners together.”
McEntire also praised Yearwood for her Food Network show, Trisha’s Southern Kitchen, which McEntire jokes was especially beneficial for her.
“You taught me a lot about cooking on your cooking show,” McEntire quips. “She was like, ‘Oh, poor little Reba. I’m gonna help her learn how to cook.’ And I appreciated that more than you know. But our friendship throughout the years means the world to me, because girls out on the road need a buddy. We are in the country music business, where girls stick together. We have fun together. We complain and gripe to each other because you can’t do that with anybody else. Nobody else understands. So congratulations on this today. I’m thrilled to pieces for you. And it is my turn to cook at the house when we have our little girl gathering … I love you with all my heart.”

McEntire and Yearwood teamed up last week to duet on “The Lights Went Out in Georgia,” for Opry 100: A Live Celebration. Yearwood commented on her enduring friendship with McEntire during her acceptance speech, saying it was McEntire who taught her to be kind to other artists.
“The person that taught me how to do that was the first artist that was so kind to me at an award show, and that was Reba McEntire, who just exemplifies friendship and class,” Yearwood says. “She sent me flowers at my first award show when no one even knew I was in the dressing room and I thought they were from my mom and dad. And then I saw that they were from Reba and I’m like, ‘Oh, okay.’
“And I am so blessed that you and I have become more than just colleagues that get to see each other, but friends that get to hang out,” she continues. “There’s a misconception that female artists in particular are always climbing at each other, and trying to get at each other. But the truth is, we’re all cheering for each other and with each other. This is an example of that. These girls, from every generation of country music, we’re all for each other.”
