Russell Dickerson is celebrating his relationship to his wife, Kailey, in his new single, “God Gave Me A Girl,” out now. The song, which Dickerson wrote with Zach Crowell, Ashley Gorley and Chase McGill, is an autobiographical look at his own relationship with Kailey, whom he began dating when they were both students at Belmont University.
“My new single, ‘God Gave Me A Girl’ is really about that aha moment,” Dickerson explains on The Jennifer Hudson Show. “The song right before it on the album is about me and her breaking up in college. It was my fault. I take full ownership, full responsibility for being an idiot. And the next song on the album is ‘God Gave Me A Girl,’ and it’s that snap moment where you’re like, ‘What am I doing? She is the one. I want to spend the rest of my life with you.'”
“God Gave Me A Girl,” from Dickerson’s latest eponymous third studio album, is one of several songs the 35-year-old has released about his wife, crafting a solid career from writing and releasing romantic songs.
“I love a love song, which is probably pretty clear to everyone at this point,” Dickerson explains. “Once we latched onto the alliteration of it everything started building from there and the lyrics are very authentic to me, but I think relatable in that sometimes elusive search for the right person.”
Russell Dickerson was released in November, two years after his Southern Symphony record was released. While the album is very true to him, the Tennessee native also says it is also some of his favorite songs he was fortunate to be a part of writing.
“It’s 15 of my favorite songs I’ve written since my last album,” Dickerson tells Everything Nash. “No ifs, ands, or buts about it. Just straight up 15 bangers. I wasn’t like, ‘Oh, we need a sad song here,’ or, ‘We need a blah, blah blah.’ I was like, ‘These are 15 songs that I can’t not record.”
Dickerson is not only enjoying new music, but time with his two-year-old son, Remington, as well.
“It’s the best thing in the world,” Dickerson boasts of being a father “We’re best friends, and I love every second we get to hang out and kiss his face and wrestle. It’s hard. He is two, but it’s absolutely the best thing in the world.”
