Russell Dickerson is enjoying a Top 20 hit with “She Likes It,” his collaboration with Jake Scott. The two hitmakers wrote the song with tunesmith Josh Kerr, celebrating their love of their respective spouses.
“That day was so fun, because Russell and I had been messaging back and forth through a friend of ours named Josh Kerr, who’s also an incredible songwriter and producer,” Scott recalls to Everything Nash. “I write with him all the time. And so the three of us had planned to write when I was in Nashville the next time. We got together, and we hit it off. As we were writing the song, Russell and I were like, ‘What if we wrote a song that’s like a duet for both of us?’ I was like, ‘That’s amazing, because you’re Russell Dickerson. This is great. I’m such a fan of yours.'”
It was Kerr who started playing the guitar riff that permeates throughout the tune, setting the tone for the rest of the song.
“It just kind of wrote itself in a way,” Scott recalls. “Russell and I started just singing along to that guitar riff that’s so iconic. And he and I both, we make no secret about the fact that we’re very in love with our wives. So we wrote the song as a fun lighthearted way to talk about keeping that flame alive when you’re in a committed relationship, and when you’re having fun with someone you’ve been with for years and years and years.
“The whole song is just lighthearted,” he adds. “It’s fun. And I’m so happy with how it turned out. It was one that we knew was special the day we wrote it. We were like, ‘Oh, this is great. This is fun.’ But to see the way people have responded to it and streamed it, it’s been outrageous.”
Scott got a chance to perform “She Likes It” with Dickerson, when Dickerson headlined his own show at Nashville’s Ryman Auditorium earlier this year.
“It was a blast,” Scott recounts. “That show was so much fun. The Ryman is obviously iconic, so it was just kind of a surreal moment to be on that stage, even if it was just for two minutes.”
“She Likes It” is from Dickerson’s eponymous third studio album, which will be released on November 4.
Scott is currently headlining his Lavender Tour, which plays in Nashville on Tuesday, October 25. Find all of his music and upcoming shows here. Dickerson’s music and tour dates can be found at RussellDickerson.com.
