Scotty McCreery‘s “It Matters To Her” is the final single from his 2021 Same Truck album. The father of one is hard at work on his fifth studio record, one he says will be very, very country.
“I think what I’ve found that works for me and what I like doing is pretty autobiographical stuff and writing about life,” McCreery reveals on Audacy’s Katie & Company. “So there will obviously be baby songs on this record, but there will be other stuff too. It’s country. Our steel guitar player, Mike Johnson, was in the studio with us, and he’s like, ‘Man, I actually get to play country music this week!’ He was loving it, and I love singing that stuff, so hopefully folks are ready for a little dose of country music.”
After winning Season 10 of American Idol in 2011, McCreery was at an all-time high. Five years later, that high turned into an all-time low, when he was dropped by his record label.
“It’s pretty wild. To me, to look back on my career, and see the roller coaster ride,” McCreery says, reflecting on the journey. “It was really wild coming off of Idol, and everything that came with that at the time. Having the success but then everything stopping, and not knowing what we’re going to do tomorrow.”
Fortunately, McCreery wasn’t willing to give up without a fight. Undeterred, the singer-songwriter released “Five More Minutes” on his own, a song that became the first of five consecutive No. 1 hits for him.
“Brick by brick, “McCreery says of his philosophy for his rising career. “That’s what I tell my team, my management all the time. Brick by brick, we’ll make believers. I still feel that way. It’s been wild to have five in a row. Fingers crossed for the next one. I’m not going to say anything. I still have that mentality of, it’s never enough. Always try to raise the bar. I still appreciate it all. It’s been the wildest few years of my life, these last few, but I’m still trying. I’m still not satisfied. I still want to keep growing and getting better. Write better songs, have better shows.”
As McCreery continues to work on his next set of tunes, the 29-year-old says it will be a glimpse of his life now, which includes his almost five years of marriage to his wife, Gabi, being a dad and more.
“You kind of realize what’s important and what’s not,” McCreery admits. “I think that’s coming through the songwriting, and what I’m writing about. Things have definitely changed in a lot of ways, but definitely the songwriting.”
McCreery, who is currently on the road with Brooks & Dunn, serving as the opening act on their REBOOT 2023 Tour, has a big fall planned. He will be inducted into the North Carolina Music Hall of Fame, and hints that he has something else coming later this year at a football stadium, which he can’t announce yet.
