While in Florida, the singer-songwriter also spoke about his holiday plans, with his wife, Gabi, and one-year-old son, Avery.
“I think we’re still figuring it out,” McCreery told New Country 103.1 radio station. “Avery was here last year, but he was just a potato sitting there. This year, I think he’ll be a little more interactive. We’ll get him presents, and he’ll probably just like the wrapping paper. We always split up Christmas and Thanksgiving. My family and my wife’s family. This year was her Thanksgiving and my family for Christmas. We don’t have anything too crazy.”
McCreery received an early Christmas present, when he was asked to be the next member of the Grand Ole Opry. The 30-year-old was invited to join by Garth Brooks, while McCreery was performing as part of Opry Country Christmas.
“It is the coolest thing that’s ever happened to me in my career,” the American Idol alum said of the honor. “If you asked me ten years ago, or 12 years ago, if you asked me five years ago, ‘What’s your biggest goal in country music?’ … you can look across all the interviews, and it was to be a member of the Grand Ole Opry. It was such a special night. I didn’t know it was going to be. I wanted it for so long.
“Every time I play the Opry, I’m like, ‘Is this the night?’ This was a Christmas show … it wasn’t even on my radar,” he continued. “I’m like, ‘Three songs, I’ll be in bed by 10:00 PM, and I’ll be home tomorrow.’ But then Garth Brooks showed up, and my family flew in, and I didn’t know it. My wife knew, my band knew, my team knew. Everybody knew.”
McCreery’s current single, “Cab In A Solo,” is inching close to the Top 20. The song is the debut single from his forthcoming new album.
“I thought ‘Cab In A Solo’ was going to be a great first taste for folks, if they’re looking forward to the album, what the album’s going to be like,” McCreery explained. “To be honest, there’s stuff on this record that’s countrier than ‘Cab In A Solo,’ I would say. We dove right in on this sound and the storytelling and songwriting, in a bunch of different directions. I feel like there’s a song on this record for everybody. It’s a good first taste I would say, to be indicative of what the album’s going to be.”
McCreery will begin his Cab In A Solo Tour on January 26 in Troy, Ohio. A date for his Grand Ole Opry induction has yet to be announced. Find all of McCreery’s music and tour dates at ScottyMcCreery.com.
