Scotty McCreery is sharing the story behind “Red Letter Blueprint.” McCreery just dropped a new version of the song, this one with Jason Crabb. The song also appears on McCreery’s latest Rise & Fall album, released last year.
“Both my granddaddy’s were very influential in my life,” McCreery says, in a video shared on social media. “My granddaddy R.P. in particular. He was Andy Griffith, basically. He was a state trooper in Elizabeth City, North Carolina. Everybody knew him, everybody loved him. He was a man of God and always prayed before every meal for the whole family. Just a guy that I grew up wanting to be like, like my granddaddy. This song was very inspired by him.”

McCreery has been vocal about his faith, which is what prompted him to put “Red Letter Blueprint” on Rise & Fall.
“My faith is everything to me,” McCreery says. “It’s held me up during my lows, and it’s been with me when I celebrate my highs. This new album was influenced by the rises and falls in my life through the years, so I wanted to sing about what sustains me. I’ve featured songs about my wife and my son, but I also wanted to share a song about my faith. I hope it is comforting to anyone who may need to hear these words.”
McCreery wrote “Red Letter Blueprint” with Derek George, Brent Anderson, Jeremy Bussey and Monty Criswell. Of all the songs that McCreery has written, of which there are many, he says “Red Letter Blueprint” is one of his favorites.
“It’s just about how, every answer you need is right there in the Good Book, in the Bible,” McCreery shares. “I try to dive in and read the Word as best as I can. I’m like everybody who wishes they could do more, but it’s just that kind of song. ‘Hey, if life is going here, if life is going there,’ it applies to those right there. It’s a special song. I loved it when we were writing it. I love how it’s come out in the studio. I think folks will enjoy it.”
It was one of McCreery’s band members who suggested he release a new version of “Red Letter Blueprint,” this one featuring Crabb.
“I’ve been a big fan of Jason Crabb,” McCreery said when announcing the duet. “When my guitarist suggested we collab on ‘Red Letter Blueprint’ I knew it was going to turn out special. Having him on the song took it from a track I love, to a track I am so so proud of.”
McCreery will spend part of 2025 opening for Kane Brown on Brown’s The High Road Tour. He will also headline his own UK Tour this year. Find all of McCreery’s music and upcoming shows at ScottyMcCreery.com.
