The countdown is on for Scotty McCreery to become a father. The 28-year-old and his wife, Gabi, will welcome their first child, a boy, this fall, and the last few months seem to be flying by.
“The baby is coming fast,” McCreery shared with Everything Nash and other outlets during a recent media event. “It seems like yesterday that Gabi showed me the pregnancy test, and she was like, ‘We’re having a kid.'”
McCreery is eager to become a father, but he’s even more eager to see his wife of four years become a mother, a role he says she was made for.
“We’ve got to build a nursery and get all this stuff ready,” McCreery says. “But we’re so excited. It’s going to be the biggest blessing. And I’m so excited to be a dad, probably more so excited to see Gabi be a mom, ’cause she’s just going to absolutely crush it. Just how caring and thoughtful she is. She puts everybody’s needs in front of her own, and she’s just going to be the best mom. I can’t wait to teach this kid things. Get him on the ball field. Play him some music. Teach him guitar. We’ve already got him a little music stand to play with. We’re pumped.”
McCreery and Gabi are already more prepared than most for the inevitable illnesses and injuries, thanks to Gabi’s role in the medical field, which the American Idol alum says could be a blessing and a curse.
“The one drawback; she was a pediatric cardiac intensive care unit nurse, so she’s seen all really tough stuff. So now she’s thinking of everything that can go wrong,’ McCreery says with a laugh. “Everything’s gonna be great, and I’ll be the one asking for help … She’s going to be awesome. And she’s got the experience behind her. I can’t wait.”
The McCreerys might be almost ready for their son to arrive, but they still don’t know what they are going to call him.
“I think for us, we wanted it to come naturally,” the singer explains. “I don’t think we want to sit down and just Google all night for hours and pick. We just want something to pop. There’s a leader in the clubhouse at the moment for the name. But even still, we’ll say it as we’re driving in the car, and we’re like, ‘Are we sure it’s that?’ The second-guessing is this pressure; I’m trying to think, this will be a name for him as a baby. Sure. But it’s his name when he’s 65 years old, retired at 70, sitting on the porch. That’ll be his name there, too. So it’s a lot of pressure. We want it to come naturally. We’ve got an idea, but we’ll see if that idea holds up.”
McCreery’s upcoming shows include serving as an opener for Jason Aldean on Aldean’s Rock N’ Roll Cowboy Tour. He will also perform a special show on September 23 at Gruene Hall, to celebrate the success of “Damn Strait” in the place where George Strait‘s career began.
