Scotty McCreery ‘s career is at an all-time high, with a busy touring schedule in 2023. The American Idol alum will wrap up his headlining Damn Strait Tour later this month, and then join Brooks & Dunn, on their REBOOT 2023 Tour, which kicks off on May 4. For most of the year, he will be joined on the road by his wife, Gabi, as well as his baby boy, Avery, a dream scenario for McCreery so he doesn’t have to say goodbye to his family.
“We’re probably out there doing north of 100 shows right now a year,” McCreery shared on the Daddy vs. Doctor podcast. “So we’re getting after it. … Luckily in country music, we typically just tour Thursday through Saturday, Thursday through Sunday. So I’m normally home Sunday through Wednesday, typically, so I can be there for family, and help out and do things.”
Still, although McCreery now has a family bus, the 29-year-old knows the time is coming when he will have to cut back on his touring, making fatherhood his first priority instead.
“I’m already thinking down the road — at this point, he’s growing up and he’s changing so much, but there’s only so much I can do at this point,” McCreery says. “Mama’s kind of handling most of the stuff going on right now. But once he gets a little older, I think I’ll probably be cutting the 100 shows a year in half, so I can be there at the ball games, coaching third base, so I can do all those things. So we’ll see. But it’s definitely a balance, and I’m still brand-new, so I haven’t gotten it figured out by any means, but I guess we’ll live and learn.”
Gabi is a pediatric nurse by trade, which helps set McCreery’s mind at ease, as he adjusts to the responsibilities of having a child.
“I’m clueless,” admits the singer. “No matter what happens, I’m like, ‘What do we do here? What do we do here?’ She’s got it down pat. … Me and her are very similar. We’re laid back, go with the flow. You kind of have to when you live a life like this, and you’re going to California one day, and then you gotta fly to New York. You kind of have to roll with the punches and go with the flow, and she’s great at that too.
“She calms my nerves too, because if I hear him coughing or something, I’m like, ‘What the heck’s going on here?’ and she’s fine. She’s like, ‘He’s just coughing,'” he adds.
McCreery just celebrated his fifth consecutive No. 1 hit, with “Damn Strait,” and currently has a Top 15 single with “It Matters To Her,.” In spite of his success in country music, McCreery still calls North Carolina home, and says that will likely never change.
“I never made the move to Nashville,” McCreery reveals. “To me, North Carolina’s home. I’ve got the beach, I’ve got the mountains here. Pinehurst if I want to go golf. So I never really wanted to leave…I love to ski too, so we’re here all year long.”
