Tony Stampley has written songs for George Jones, Randy Travis, John Anderson, Travis Tritt and more, but his new song, “Colorblind,” is one he is releasing on his own. Written with his good friend, and frequent collaborator, Bonnie Swayze, the song is Tony’s response to the unrest that seems to be happening, with alarming frequency, all over the country. Although it seems timely now, the legendary songwriter says the inspiration for the song happened several years ago.
“It was inspired by Ferguson,” Tony told Everything Nash, referring to the 2014 shooting of 18-year-old Michael Brown, Jr., a black man, by a white police officer who was part of the Ferguson police department in Missouri. “You see all this stuff online that looks like fake news or stuff about like maybe somebody spraying black kid in the eye with mace. Sometimes things do happen, but people push it to the extreme with all these protests.”
“So that’s what this song is about,” he added. “We’re all God’s children. And we should all get along … You can’t judge the world, but maybe with a song, I think I can change somebody’s world.”
Tony is keeping “Colorblind” for himself, for his next record, which will be more songs with a positive message.
‘It’s going to be on my new album,” Tony revealed. “I have this great CD of 13 songs. No drinking or cheating songs on the album. I’ve written a lot of songs, for Hank Williams, Jr. I’ve written a lot of gospel songs, for George Jones, Randy Travis has recorded some. I think’s going to be a big smash … The song will help people get along, help people get along and learn to love one another and do something good for their brother. It’s not too late to overcome the hate. It might not bring world peace and it might not right all the wrongs. It might just be a tiny stepping stone.”
