Steven Curtis Chapman recently performed his current single, “Together (We’ll Get Through This)” at an empty Ryman Auditorium. The song was written by Steven in response to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, so it seemed only fitting that he performs it in the historic venue, which was also closed because of COVID-19.
“I went to the Ryman to do a live recording of a song I’ve written in the middle of all this called, ‘Together We’ll Get Through This,'” Steven told MusicRow. “It was just me and two people from the crew there and a piano. I walked into the dressing room that has the picture of Minnie Pearl and Roy Acuff. I walked in and I literally broke down, because it was one of those first moments where the reality set it that these places are made for relationships and for music to bring us together and help remind us that we are not alone.
“I felt like the whole auditorium was weeping, like ‘Where are the people?’” he continued. “So when I got the call to do this, I loved the idea that I get to bring people together, and to hang with two of my best buddies and best people in business.”
Steven originally recorded “Together (We’ll Get Through This)” with Brad Paisley, Lauren Alaina and Tasha Cobbs Leonard, as a message of hope in the uncertain times.
“I’m always prone to process my whatever’s going on in the world and how it’s affecting me with a song,” Steven told Everything Nash. “The world’s going through devastation. I’m watching people, just seeing a look in their eyes of, ‘Am I ever going to survive this? Am I ever going to smile again and is the sun ever going to shine again?’ I know that feeling.
“And so when something connects deeply with me,” he continued. “I process it with a song. Obviously you couldn’t be breathing and have a pulse and not be deeply affected by what’s going on in the world, the last two months.”
Steven just announced he is hitting the road next month, with Michael W. Smith and Mac Powell, on their joint Drive-In Theater Tour. Find more information, including tickets and dates, by visiting Steven’s website.
