Tenille Townes just teamed up with a rock music legend for an unforgettable duet. The rising star is joined by Bryan Adams for their version of “The Thing That Wrecks You.” Townes wrote the song with Kate York and Daniel Tashian, which was recorded by Lady A with Little Big Town, for Lady A’s 2019 Ocean album.
“I was recording a song for a Hallmark movie in Vancouver last summer and found myself completely enamored by the recording space we were in,” Townes recalls. “Later in the day, I found out that it was Bryan Adams’ Warehouse Studio, and I actually ran into Bryan himself on the staircase on my way out. We talked for just a few minutes, and I was so happy to meet him because his path as a fellow Canadian has been incredibly inspiring to me, with a collection of songs that have impacted the world in such a huge way.”
It was after Townes’ encounter with Adams that she remembered “The Thing That Wrecks You,” and made the bold move to ask the rock star to join her on the track.
“Later that night, I thought about ‘The Thing That Wrecks You,’ a song I’d written a while before with Kate York and Daniel Tashian, and how the spirit of that song made me think about his voice,” the 29-year-old shares. “I decided to go out on a limb and sent him the song along with a letter asking if he might be up for singing on it with me.
“Fast forward to now, where not only have I gotten to sing with a hero of mine, but I have also found a mentor and friend through this whole adventure,” she adds. “This song is evidence to me that putting a wild thought out in the atmosphere and believing in it is a powerful thing.”
Townes’ latest EP, Masquerades, was released last April. The singer-songwriter was named the ACM New Female Artist of the Year in 2021, given the good news via /Zoom by Keith Urban.
“Being the recipient of an ACM Award is something I put in a far away dream in my mind for a someday,” Townes said when the news was announced. “This moment to me feels like a seat has been pulled up at the country music table, and I’m freaking out to get to be sitting here. What a table. I’m in awe of and so inspired by this community. I used to beg my parents to let me stay up as a really little kid late enough to watch the ACMs and watch my heroes sing on the show. ”
