Talk about a country music supergroup. Texas Hill, made up of Adam Wakefield, Casey James and Craig Wayne Boyd just released their self-titled debut EP, forging their singing and songwriting talents together for one diverse new project.
“I was sitting in my garage thinking about what I wanted to do in my own personal career,” Craig told Everything Nash. “I felt beat up a little bit, and I just wanted to get back to the love of music. And one of those things for me was singing harmonies and singing in a group. In talking with my wife, who is the brilliant one, she asked who I would want to sing with. And both of these guys are my first choices. This is who I would see if I had my dream vocal group. I like their voices. I’m a fan of both of them, so I called them up.”
For Casey, the idea appealed to him as much because of the bond they shared away from music as it did putting their own spin on a new record.
“He’s got a billion kids,” Casey said of Craig. “I’ve got three. And so we were hanging out, and we were singing, because that’s what you do when you hang out with people that love music as much as you do. And it was enjoyable. I really had a good time. It wasn’t much longer after that, he kind of mentioned the idea and I was like, ‘Man, that sounds like an absolute blast. I would love that … It just felt pretty organic, the way that it happened.”
Adam, Casey and Craig were each in the middle of their own solo careers when they formed Texas Hill, careers that they plan on continuing to pursue, while also working on the trio.
“I don’t think the intention for any of us necessarily is to leave our solo careers. I think the idea is to do something that we all have a passion for, ” Casey shared. “I like the idea of making music and continuously doing different things. I don’t have any intention of stopping my solo career. I do know that there will be a massive hole simply because you can’t be in two places at the same time. So right now I’m pretty sure that all of us are putting all of our time and effort into Texas Hill. I just worked for two years to make a record, that’s about to be released.”
What makes Texas Hill stand out, aside from their great harmonies, is that all three men appeared on a reality TV talent show. Casey came in third on Season 9 of American Idol, while Adam was the runner-up on Season 10 of The Voice, and Craig won Season 7 of The Voice.
“The TV thing came along at a juncture in my life that I was feeling very down, and I needed some of affirmation, I guess,” Craig reflected. “And what better way to do that than throw everything in on TV in front of America, and say, ‘Hey, judge me!'”
“For me,” added Adam, “what was funny about the fact that everybody has been on reality shows is that if you just threw the idea of, ‘Hey, let’s take three finalists from three reality TV shows and put them in a band together,’ I’d be like, ‘That band’s gonna last a week and a half. ‘ It just shows so many people’s preconceived notions about people that are on those TV shows, including mine.”
