The Dixie Chicks appear to be following in the footsteps of Lady A, and have changed their name to reflect their opposition to the ongoing racial injustice n the United States. The trio, made up of Natalie Maines, Emily Strayer and Martie Maguire, have dropped “Dixie” from their name, and will be known as just “The Chicks,” moving forward.
The Chicks have yet to publicly comment on their name change. Their website, which is now TheChicks.com, simply states, “We want to meet this moment,” and is signed by all three band members.
The Chicks also posted a video of their new single, “March March.” The compelling video shows footage from various important events over the years, including the recent Black Lives Matter protests after the senseless death of George Floyd. The end of the video shows a tragically lengthy list of black Americans killed by police flashes on the screen.
The news of The Chicks’ name change follows Lady A’s announcement earlier in the month.
“When we set out together almost 14 years ago, we named our band after the southern ‘antebellum’ style home where we took our first photos,” Lady A said, as part of a lengthy letter shared on social media. “As musicians, it reminded us of all the music born in the south that influenced us…southern rock, blues, R&B, gospel and of course country. But we are regretful and embarrassed to say that we did not take into account the associations that weigh down this world referring to the period of history before the Civil War, which includes slavery.
“We are deeply sorry for the hurt this has caused and for anyone who has felt unsafe, unseen or unvalued,” they added. “Causing pain was never our heart’s intention, but it doesn’t change the fact that indeed, it did just that. So today, we speak up and make a change. We hope you will dig in and join us.”
Dixie Chick’s new album, Gaslighter, will be released on July 17. The record is available for pre-order at TheChicks.com.
