The Highway Women on Celebrating Female Artists: ‘It’s About Time’ (EXCLUSIVE)

The Highway Women currently has four members: Drew Haley, Heather Harper,  Kristen Kae and new member, Bailey James, but their goal is to celebrate all female artists. Launched in 2016, the members of The Highway Women might change over time, but their one goal has remained the same, which is to support other women in country music, especially now.

“I say it’s about time,” Drew told Everything Nash. “I mean, it’s been years of really trying to bring awareness to it, and there’s so much talent in this town. There’s so many talented female artists. We want to be heard on the radio, and exposed like everyone else. It’s been a long time coming. I spent about nine years in town. Since I’ve been here, it’s been an issue.”

The Highway Women released “Shake the Dust” earlier this summer, and plan on continuing to release new music, hoping to take their music — and their message — as far as possible.

‘I kind of just shoot for the stars, and try to go as far as I can with things,” Drew shared. “I will say, as the group, really the whole point of why we’re doing this is not only just to make music, but we have a strong mission of trying to help female artists in the business, whether we can help them on different tracks or in different ways. We actually have a program that we have coming up that we’re putting together to help other female artists. That’s kind of our mission. So if we can just get awareness out about that or help them in any way, that’s why we do what we do.”

All of The Highway Women work hard to support their music and their cause, both with their solo careers and with day jobs. The group had hoped to be working full-time on The Highway Women by now, and were on the path to being able to do so in 2020, when COVID-19 canceled their tour dates, forcing them to get creative as they move forward.

“A lot of happened last year,” Kristen said. “You book tours and festivals almost a year in advance. We had a lot in the works for this summer, and of course COVID happened, and everything got canceled. Everyone’s in that boat. We’re not alone in that. We’re certainly heading in that direction where this is full-time for us.”

For now, The Highway Women will continue to release music, sharing as much as they can as quickly as they can with their fans.

“We’ve been going the single by single route,” Kristen explained. “I think right now especially, I feel like the music business is kind of shifting that direction. Right now it’s just about putting out music as much as you can. With everything going on, for me personally, I feel like the music is helping us through all of the stuff going on in the world. It’s kind of cool to just put out songs every once in a while and have something to cause people to listen to, too. So I like going that way.”

The Highway Women plan on releasing a new single in September. Keep track of updates, and download their music, by visiting their website.
