The Swon Brothers Release ‘Mommas,’ Inspired by Their Own Mother (Exclusive)

Just in time for Mother’s Day, the Swon Brothers, made up of Zach and Colton Swon, released “Mommas.” The song was written and produced by the sibling duo, and inspired by their own devoted mother, Tammy Swon.

“We were sitting down to write another song,” Colton recalled to Everything Nash. “We finished one actually. Our mother called and interrupted and was like, ‘Hey boy, you need to check out the storms.’ It was some kind of mom warning. We got off the phone and I was like, ‘Thank God for mommas,’ and that’s literally how that song started.

“We just killed the other song,” he added. “We just dropped it and started this one right then and there. It was just a conversation between my brother and I. We wrote it in about two hours.”

The brothers have been through a lot together, especially since coming in third on Season 4 of The Voice in 2013. But even as close as they are, both Colton and Zach admit there were parts of writing “Mommas” that were uncomfortable, for both of them.

“It was the most awkward write we’ve ever been in,” Colton admitted. “And we probably wrote it in two hours, but it probably took us about eight hours because two grown men in a room together and just crying over every line. You know that sick feeling you get? It just really got us this one.”

“Mommas” is from an upcoming new project, which will be their first full-length album since their self-titled 2014 debut.

“Are records still a thing?” Colton reflected. “I don’t know. I don’t know if people really still dig them. But at some point, we just looked back, and we’ve released 13 songs over the last six years, but that’s not enough for us as artists. So, we kind of hinted around about it on our social media posts one night and probably got the most reaction we’ve had in a long time about doing a full album from people. It seems like they’re ready for it.”

The Swon Brothers don’t know when their record will come out, but they do know at least most of the songs that will be on the project, which includes some of country music’s biggest artists.

“We wrote half the record,” Zach revealed. “There are about four songs that are outside cuts from Tyler Hubbard. We got some songs from Tree Vibez. Just the names of the writers involved: there’s Jimi Westbrook from Little Big Town. Charles Kelley, Brian [Kelley] and Tyler. There’s one song by Corey Crowder. So we’re in good company and have some really, really fun songs.”
