Thomas Rhett‘s career remains at an all-time high. The 33-year-old just notched his 21st No. 1 hit with “Angels,” a song he wrote with Julian Bunetta, Teddy Swims and Josh Thompson, from his 2022 Where We Started record.
“I feel like I’ve been pretty known for love songs throughout my career, but I think we did a good job of portraying love from a different perspective on this one, so that makes it really special for me,” Rhett says. “This is really an ode to my wife, and on a grander scale, this is for that person in everybody’s life that has stuck with them through thick and thin.
“So thank you to all those people. It’s really cool to have been celebrating 20 number ones this year and now to be celebrating my 21st career number one is crazy,” he continues. “I’m just really humbled and grateful and can’t wait for the next ten years.”
Rhett previously said that the inspiration for “Angels” came by thinking about how much Lauren Akins has withstood by being with him, esepcially in the early years of his career.
“Lauren’s been through the wringer with me in the van days, the bus days, and now today’s days, and she’s always taken my life as a champ,” Rhett told Southern Living. “I say this a lot before I play the song live, but I look at Lauren sometimes and I do truly wonder every now and then if her body is completely just taken over by an angel, because it takes a lot of patience to be married to somebody like me.”
The father of four is already working on a new album, but very few people will get to hear it until it’s nearly completed.
“I’ve written so much music over the last couple of years, and it’s the most in the dark most people on my team are about it,” Rhett tells Audacy‘s Katie & Company. “I think over the years I’ve gotten so many opinions about songs that I was talked out of a few, and this one, I kind of just wanna get to it and be like, ‘Okay, I put my stamp on all of these, now give me your opinions.’”
Rhett’s Home Team Tour wraps up with two back-to-back shows at Nashville’s Bridgestone Arena this weekend. His 20 Number Ones album, celebrating all of his chart-topping singles to date, will be out on September 29. Find music and tour dates at ThomasRhett.com.
