Tiffany Woys‘ latest project is born of a lot of heartache, and a growth that occurred as she emerged stronger from the ashes. The singer-songwriter co-wrote six of the eight songs on I’m Your Woman, a deeply personal look at Woys’ unexpected end to an engagement with a man she had been with for several years, mere weeks before the wedding was to take place.
“What came from it is me writing, which I think is really cool, and something that I was not intending on really doing,” Woys tells Everything Nash. “I’ve been pretty bold with my team, and just being unapologetic about the fact that I loved being the vehicle for other songwriters, and them pitching me songs. I still do; I still support that. But because of what I went through, I turned to music like everybody else does, when you want to listen to something that you relate to, and there was nothing out there that related to what I was going through.”
Woys wisely took that as a sign that she needed to write out her own thoughts and feelings for what became I‘m Your Woman, sharing both the highs and lows of her journey towards healing in songs like “Fool Me Once,” “Took Back” and more.
The former couple initially planned on getting married in 2022 in Charleston, with their wedding postponed, after they had already flown to the city, due to Hurricane Ian. It was when all of the vendors agreed on a new date, an unheard-of occurrence, when Woys first realized there might be trouble.
“I was like, ‘Yes, this is great,” Woys recalls. “I looked over at him, and his face didn’t say, ‘Great.’ It felt like he wasn’t excited about it. I think it was just a downhill slope from there. I still could not tell you really why or what exactly happened. There was never a closure conversation. So a lot of this music for me was having a one-sided closure conversation.”
“Took Back” is in many ways the conversation she never got to have with her former fiancé, a conversation he refused to have with her.
“That song was fully written in the intention of, and it’s fully in the voice of me talking to him …It’s the one that hits the hardest,” Woys says. “For me, it’s my last words to him that he never allowed me to have. He completely just cut me off. It was like a flip of the switch.”
Woys rightfully needed time to heal from her heartache, but is now healthy and strong, and happy in a relationship again.
“I’m the person that will not wallow and sit on my couch for very long,” Woys maintains. “LIfe isn’t going to find me in my living room. I have to go out and find my life. So that’s how I’ve always looked at heartbreak. I’m also not the kind of person who needed to Eat, Pray, Love my way through finding myself. I wasn’t lost. I knew who I was; I knew what I wanted. He was the lost one. He didn’t know what he wanted. So for me, I cried for about a month, and then I said, ‘No more.'”
