You may need a tissue or two before you watch Tim McGraw’s video for his current single, “I Called Mama.” The video shows the powerful relationship between mothers and their children, young to old, including some who have been directly impacted by COVID-19.
“’I Called Mama’ is a song that really, is about connecting, I guess back to what grounds you when life shakes you up,” Tim told his record label of the song. “I think we all, literally and figuratively, when our life gets out of control, when the world starts getting out of control and you feel a little unbalanced and you can’t quite figure out where a home base is, I think we all want to call mom.
“And we all wanna connect to something that really matters and something that really grounds us and something that really makes us stop and reflect on who we are, what we are, and what our North Star is, and what our principles are,” he added.
Tim previously praised his own mother, Betty D’Agostino –- who appears in the “I Called Mama” video –– for her role in raising him, even when life wasn’t easy.
“There’s always an anchor there,” Tim said, speaking of the relationship between mothers and their children. “And it’s something about someone who knows you so intimately, and knows who you are from here to there and everywhere in between. You can’t bull–– her. You can for a little while, but she knows who you are and she’ll call you on it.
“I think right now, what this world feels like to us is, when you’ve had a little bit too much to drink, and you lay down on the bed and everything starts spinning, and you put your foot on the floor and it sorta stops it, so you kind of fall asleep with one foot on the floor?” he continued. “Well that’s what mom does. She’s that foot on the floor when the world’s spinning.”
“I Called Mama” might be one of the most powerful, and personal, songs Tim has ever recorded, but he has his wife, Faith Hill, to thank in part for convincing him to record the song.
“I wanted Faith to hear it, but I didn’t want to play it,” Tim recounted of when he tried to play her the song. “It was just a guitar demo or a guitar work tape … I wanted to sing it to her. So I was trying to learn the words to it really quickly so I could sing her just the first verse and chorus.”
“I sat down at the kitchen table and started singing it, and I couldn’t get through it,” he continued. “I got to the chorus, and every time I tried to get to the chorus, I would fall apart on it. She would start crying because I was crying … She was like a hand that weighed in big time on the song. And so, when she puts her hand on something … it’s hard not to not listen to her for sure.”
