Tim McGraw has a new single, out now. The father of three just released “Paper Umbrellas,” a collaboration with Parker McCollum. The song immediately resonated with both McGraw and McCollum’s fans, but their opinions didn’t matter to McGraw nearly as much as his wife, Faith Hill.
“Oh, she loved it, so I got her stamp of approval,” McGraw says. “That’s probably more important than anything else in my life, is to get her stamp of approval on something, because if there’s anybody’s ears I trust, it’s hers. But, you know, we don’t always agree, either, so that’s always a good thing, too. ‘Cause she’ll check me on stuff that I think’s great, and she’ll go, ‘Eh, that’s pretty average.'”
McGraw relies on Hill more than anybody else, even if he doesn’t always heed her advice.
“Faith is invaluable to me in every way,” McGraw tells The Tennessean. “But creatively, I trust her ears 100 percent. She still hears rough mixes of everything I record before anyone else does. And she’s a tough judge to please. She hasn’t liked even some of my hits when she heard them the first time. The beauty of all of this is that we love each other, trust each other’s instincts and glean everything we can out of each other to make our projects better.”
McGraw and Hill previously worked together on the 1883 series, a spin-off of Yellowstone.Although the show came to an end, McGraw would love to team up with Hill again for another TV show or film.
“It was wonderful,” McGraw says. “I was always amazed every day doing scenes with her, how good she was. She really elevated my game and made me better, because she was just so natural and so good. And to see her build her arc as Margaret and how powerful and strong Margaret’s character became, and watch her build that was just pretty phenomenal.”
McGraw and Hill have both had successful acting careers on their own, but McGraw found new enjoyment in sharing scenes with his spouse.
“It was wonderful,” McGraw said of the experience. “I was always amazed every day doing scenes with her, how good she was. She really elevated my game and made me better, because she was just so natural and so good. And to see her build her arc as Margaret and how powerful and strong Margaret’s character became, and watch her build that was just pretty phenomenal.”
McGraw celebrated his 47th No. 1 hit last year, with “One Bad Habit.” Fortunately, the 57-year-old still has a lot more music he wants to make.
“I still want to win the equivalent of the Super Bowl with every single I’m putting out,” McGraw says.
“I’m still a hard-working songwriter playing my guitar who loves iconic country songs,” he adds. “When I’m sitting at the mixing board with [producer Byron Gallimore], and we hear an undeniable song that we’ve developed, it fires up my competitive juices and the old athlete that I am wants to take the field.”
