Tim McGraw and Faith Hill will celebrate 28 years of marriage on Sunday, October 6, but that still doesn’t make McGraw an expert, at least according to him. The Louisiana native says he is still learning how to be a good husband, even after all these years.
“I am not an expert,” McGraw tells his record label. “I don’t think anybody is. Marriage is — any relationship’s tough if you don’t cultivate it, and certainly if you’re not committed to it. Love and respect are always important, but I think that knowing that there’s gonna be tough times and knowing there’s gonna be times where you don’t like each other as much, all those things are gonna happen.
“I think that it’s knowing those things are gonna be there,” he adds. “Still knowing that you’re gonna get through the other side of it and you want to be together, and this is what you want your life to look like, I think is the important thing.”
Both McGraw and Hill were early in their respective careers, when they first met backstage at a music industry event. It’s a moment that is forever etched in McGraw’s mind.
“My knees went weak,” McGraw admits on Country Countdown USA. “I was definitely smitten with her. It took her a while. I had that ugly red and black jacket on. I’m surprised she paid any attention to me.”
Throughout their marriage, the father of three has been vocal about his love for Hill, and how she makes his life better, in all aspects of his life, including his music.
“Faith is invaluable to me in every way,” McGraw tells The Tennessean. “But creatively, I trust her ears 100 percent. She still hears rough mixes of everything I record before anyone else does. And she’s a tough judge to please. She hasn’t liked even some of my hits when she heard them the first time. The beauty of all of this is that we love each other, trust each other’s instincts and glean everything we can out of each other to make our projects better.”
The 57-year-old praised Hill last year, when he received the ACM Icon Award at the 2023 ACM Honors ceremony.
“My world changed the day I met Faith Hill … You’re my partner in life, you’re my partner musically,” McGraw said at the time. “And how blessed I am. I would not be where I am today, without you and your grace. I love you unconditionally.”
McGraw currently has a Top 20 hit with “One Bad Habit,” a song from his Poet’s Resumé EP, with the video featuring Hill.
“I love that record,” McGraw says on the Eden and Amadeus podcast. “It was one of those records that was interesting when we went into the studio. I loved the song. I was trying to figure out what to do with it because the demo was way different than the record we ended up making. It was slower and a whole different sort of arrangement. And we went and sort of dug in deep on that song because we felt like it was a really great song.”
