Tilghman was inspired to write “Dig My Grave,” which he penned with Southbound’s Clint Brown and Sam Nobles, by thinking about the finality of life, at least here on earth.
“On the surface, it’s really just a Biblical truth, that this life is not all there is,” Tilghman explained on the Rob Patz Project. “One of these days, we have a promise from the Scripture — it might not be our favorite Bible promise — but we all have a promise that our hearts are going to stop beating and this life will end. But that’s not the end. And so that’s what the song is about. But aside from that, it’s a jam. It really is … It’s really like a rock, swampy song, but it’s a gospel song.”
“We intentionally got some really gifted, talented soul singers to do the BGVs,” he adds. “I’m really super excited about it.”
Tilghman has been moving full-speed ahead since winning The Voice in 2020. The Mississippi native was pastoring a church when he auditioned for the reality TV talent show, which completely changed his life and career. While Tilghman has worked hard on being an artist — very hard — since appearing on The Voice, he admits his wife, Brooke, has been the one who encouraged him to keep pursuing his passions, throughout their marriage.
“She is the gas, and I’m the brakes,” Tilghman boasts. “She is the push and I’m the, ‘Hang on. Let’s see how this is gonna be.’ But in that time, I would say three or four times, I’ve been the one. And I wanna be honest, it hasn’t worked out every time like I thought it would, but I never regretted putting myself out there. Never regretted taking a shot. Because, I don’t mean to be cliché and corny and cheesy, but you really do miss 100 percent of the shots you don’t take.”
Tilghman has, since his time on The Voice, also worked hard to encourage others to keep pursuing their dreams, even if they seem impossible.
“What I do now, I don’t want to say it’s not a dream, but I consider it more of a vision than a dream,” the father of eight maintains. “But you keep working toward that. There’s just no way, scripturally or testimonially, in my life, that God’s not going to honor that. He always does.”
