Trace Adkins just released his new single “Just The Way We Do It,” and if the video is any indication, Trace likes to have a good time, wherever he is. The party-filled video, which shows the sober singer appropriately drinking iced tea, illustrates just one of six songs on his upcoming Ain’t That Kind of Cowboy EP, out on October 16.
“I’m from the northern part of the state,” the Louisiana native told The Tennessean, explaining his draw to the song. “Cajun influence really isn’t as prevalent where I’m from. Still, when I started playing music, I was working with a band from Lafayette, Louisiana, and we’d go play festivals down there. I was exposed to a lot of that stuff. I always liked it. It kinda felt like home to me.”
“[It’s] just a fun song,” he added. “Every now and then you just gotta cut something for fun.”
The video shows the 58-year-old surrounded by people a generation younger than him — not that the age difference bothers him.
“That’s kind of where I’m at,” Trace admitted. “I’ve got kids and grandkids. It’s that resignation, like, ‘OK. This is gonna happen. Here we go.’ You just resign yourself to it, play along and … make sure nothing too crazy’s going on. Let ’em have their fun.”
Trace also released “Mind on Fishin’” from his next set of tunes, but says not all of the songs on Ain’t That Kind of Cowboy are as light-hearted.
“There’s a ballad and a couple of mid-tempos,” said the singer. “It’s a little more sedate, but not unusual for anybody that’s followed my career. I love to do that stuff.”
Ain’t That Kind of Cowboy marks Trace’s first release on Verge Records, a partnership he is happy to be part of for this stage of his career.
“We released Trace’s first two songs on Verge starting in March of this year,” President and COO of Verge Mickey Jack Cones said in a statement. “Those songs have garnered millions of streams and views in just four short months – more than any songs in his career in that span of time – proving what we already knew. There is a huge demand for Trace Adkins’ music! This EP is an answer to that demand and is sure to leave the listeners wanting more. Get ready…it’s coming!”
“It was great to work with Bart and Mickey Jack on these handpicked songs from some of my favorite writers,” Trace added. “I’m really proud of these songs and looking forward to what’s to come.”
