Vince Gill is heading out on the road, for one very special reason. The Country Music Hall of Fame member is embarking on a summer tour, An Evening With Vince Gill, to celebrate a very important milestone.
“I left home 50 years ago to try and become an accomplished musician, and perform in front of whoever would show up,” the 67-year-old says. “All these years later, it feels as special today as it ever did.”
Gill might have some new music to perform on his upcoming tour. He recently revealed that he had written more than 100 songs, and was ready for a new musical chapter.
“[I’m] fired up,” Gill tells American Songwriter, sharing why this might be his favorite era in music. Gill partnered with former BMI executive Jody Williams, who started a publishing company,
“I never had a publisher,” Gill explains. “That probably shocks people. I never felt the need to have one. I had a vehicle for my songs with my own record deal and my own records that I was going to make. That was enough for me.”
Gill’s tour comes as he is wrapping up his current run of dates at Sphere in Las Vegas with the Eagles, a band he has been part of for the past eight years. It was an unexpected move for Gill, who was invited to join the iconic band after Glenn Frey passed away.
“It’s pretty surreal, to be honest with you,” Gill tells Guitarist. “Some nights, I look over to the side and see Joe Walsh while we’re playing ‘Rocky Mountain Way,’ and I’m transported back to being a kid in my bedroom trying to learn that song.
“I played it at every school dance and there’s even tapes of me singing Eagles songs when I was a kid,” he adds with a laugh. “It’s been pretty amazing to be a part of keeping the legacy of those songs going … it’s a blast.”
Gill will kick off his tour on May 8 in Rochester, New York. He will wrap up the tour with four shows at Nashville’s Ryman Auditorium, on August 8, 9, 15 and 16. See a list of dates below. Find more information at VinceGill.com.
