Vince Gill on Charlie Daniels’ Death: ‘He Was a Great Example of Loyalty’

Vince Gill is one of the numerous artists speaking out about the sudden death of Charlie Daniels. Vince offered a touching tribute to the country music legend, with whom he enjoyed a friendship that lasted since the beginning of Vince’s career.

“I first met Charlie Daniels in 1976, and then when I was touring as part of Pure Prairie League, we opened a bunch of shows for him,” Vince told Billboard, in a statement he also shared on social media. “I made a great friend in Charlie, and we’ve remained friends for over 40 years — that’s hard to do. He was a great example of loyalty and I’ll miss him.”

Other artists have been speaking out about the passing of Charlie, including fellow Grand Ole Opry member, Travis Tritt.

“My heart is crushed today after hearing that my dear friend Charlie Daniels has passed away,” Travis shared. “Charlie was the first legendary artist to take me under his wing and encourage me when I was first getting started in the business. He was always there for me when I needed him. I have so many great memories of touring, performing, writing and recording with Charlie, but my favorite memories are of simply talking with the man when it was just the two of us alone. Farewell dear friend until we meet again. Thank you for being such a friend, mentor and inspiration to me. I will always be grateful. My deepest condolences go out to the Daniels family, friends and fans.”

Brad Paisley also spoke about the sudden passing of Charlie in a touching tribute.

“I’m so sad he’s gone,” Brad shared. “But I know he had no doubt about where he was going when this life was over. We have so many memories together, and I am so blessed to have known him. He beat the devil with his fiddle, and I’m sure he’s opening up his case and resining up his bow now to play for the Lord. Rest In Peace my friend. We love you.”

Charlie passed away on Monday, July 6, at a Tennessee hospital, after suffering a hemorrhagic stroke. He is survived by his wife, Hazel, and son, Charlie Daniels, Jr. Funeral arrangements have yet to be announced.
