Watch Cody Johnson and Carrie Underwood Record ‘I’m Gonna Love You’

Cody Johnson is letting fans take a look at his recording session with  Carrie Underwood for “I’m Gonna Love You.” The father of two shared the video of them recording the song together in the studio.

The video shows what Johnson had previously revealed, which is that the version they released is of them recording the song together live in the studio.

“I did my part; I did my vocal part, and we had it done,” Johnson shared with Everything Nash and other outlets at a recent media event. “When she came into the studio, she did her part, and we’re listening back to it. We both kind of had this look like it just didn’t hit you. It didn’t slap you in the face like I thought it would.”

It was Underwood who suggested that they both redo their vocals, this time singing the song together at the same time.

“She’s like, ‘I think we should sing it live. Let’s just go in and sing it live together.’ So, glass between the two microphones. Well now, we’re singing in church,” Johnson recalled.

“What you hear on the record, that’s a live take … that’s a live version,” he added. “It was weird because that was the first time Carrie and I ever sang together, and it was perfect family harmony. I think that speaks to the caliber of vocalist that she is, really.”

Johnson also let Underwood pick the key, which ended up being perfect for both of them.

“We found a spot right in the middle to where she could really do something that she doesn’t normally get to do,” Johnson explained. “It’s that soulful, sultry, sexy kind of low end thing, and it left my vocal right in the middle, it blended better with the harmonies, but she still gets to show off who she is.”

Johnson was so certain that Underwood was right for “I’m Gonna Love You,” that he said he would only record it if she would sing it with him. Thankfully, she agreed, but even better than the song for Johnson, was the chance to work with the country music superstar.

“We’re around the same age, but I always grew up listening to your music, and I wondered what it would be like to be in that position,” Johnson tells Underwood. “They say don’t meet your heroes, ’cause you might get disappointed. And I was not disappointed. It’s a breath of fresh air to meet someone that fame hasn’t affected, and that is really staying grounded. And, when I told my kids, my little girls, that I met Carrie Underwood, they forgot all about Cody Johnson.”

Fortunately for Johnson, the admiration was mutual, with Underwood eager to work with Johnson as well.

“I think the first time we met was at an awards show,” Underwood recalls. “There’s always so much going on at those things, and everybody’s just coming and going. I remember leaving that night, just saying, ‘I really like that guy. I hope I watch him do great things.’”

“I’m Gonna Love You” is currently in the Top 15 on the charts. Find the song at  CodyJohnsonMusic.com.
