Willie Nelson, Sheryl Crow Among the 2023 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Nominees

The 2023 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame nominees have just been announced, and the list includes one country music superstar, and one artist with deep ties to country music. Willie Nelson and Sheryl Crow are among the list of nominees, along with Missy Elliott, the White Stripes, the late George Michael, Cyndi Lauper, the late Warren Zevon ,and a combined entry for Joy Division and its spinoff, New Order.

In addition, Kate Bush, Iron Maiden, Rage Against the Machine, Soundgarden, the Spinners and A Tribe Called Quest, all previously nominated, have been nominated again this year.

“This remarkable list of nominees reflects the diverse artists and music that the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame honors and celebrates,” John Sykes, chairman of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Foundation, say in a statement, via the Los Angeles Times. “These artists have created their own sounds that have impacted generations and influenced countless others that have followed in their footsteps.”

To be eligible, an artist or group must have released its first commercial recording at least 25 years prior to the nomination. While Nelson’s music has remained largely within the country music genre — even if he successfully blurred those lines — Nelson has a long history of collaborating with rock artists, including John Mellencamp, Neil Young, Michael McDonald, Julio Iglesias, Carlos Santana, and Jon Bon Jovi with Riche Sambora, among others.

In addition, Nelson’s annual Farm Aid event, which began in 1985, has a lengthy and widely successful history of welcoming artists of all genres to the benefit concert.

Crow has had a successful career, spanning three decades, in rock music, but she isn’t a stranger to the country music world. The Missouri native released the country album, Feels Like Home, in 2013, which included the Top 30 singles, “Easy” and “Callin’ Me When I’m Lonely.” She also released Threads in 2019, which included collaborations with Maren Morris, Chris Stapleton, Nelson and Vince Gill, among others.

The final inductees will be announced in May. Dolly Parton was inducted in November, although she initially declined the nomination, later accepting the honor.

“I’m sure a lot of you knew that back when they said they were gonna put me in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, I didn’t really feel like I had done enough to deserve that,” Parton said during the induction ceremony (via Variety). “And I didn’t understand at the time that it’s about a little more than that. But I’m just honored and so proud to be here tonight. … When I always thought about the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, I thought that was just for people in rock ‘n’ roll!”

If Nelson is inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, he would join a long list of country music artists with that honor, including Parton, Chet Atkins, Johnny Cash, Bill Monroe, Jimmie Rodgers and Hank Williams, among others.

The final inductees will be announced in May, with the ceremony held in the fall.

Nelson, who will turn 90 on April 29, will be honored with a two-night Long Story Short: Willie Nelson 90, A Star- Studded Concert Celebrating Willie’s 90th Birthday. The shows will take place on Saturday and Sunday, April 29 and 30, 2023, at the legendary Hollywood Bowl, featuring performances by Nelson, along with Allison Russell, Beck, Chris Stapleton, Edie Brickell, Kacey Musgraves, Leon Bridges, Lukas Nelson, Lyle Lovett, Margo Price, Miranda Lambert, Neil Young, Norah Jones,  Rosanne Cash, Crow, Snoop Dogg, Sturgill Simpson, The Avett Brothers, The Chicks, The Lumineers, Turnpike Troubadours, Tom Jones and Tyler Childers, among others.
